UASC sponsors the naming ceremony of 18,800TEU MV 'Barzan', on April the 29th at  HSHI(HYUNDAI SAMHO Heavy Industries)

Out of the 17 ships order placed with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HII) last November, the first 15,000TEU MV “Sajir” was already delivered and the rest are still under building.

At the naming ceremony of its first 18,800 TEU MV “Barzan”, on April the 29th at HSHI(HYUNDAI SAMHO Heavy Industries)  ,the Board of UASC,CEOs,New Shipsteam, Operations,other HQ executive Board members along with large shippers as well as media, a large 150 plus people are expected to attend. In regards to the naming ceremony, UASC’s Korea agency president, Mr. Taewon Park remarks, “with the total order amount being over 2 billion dollars, it is the largest investment of UASC to date and with the completion of all ships and realignment of fleets, UASC will be in the top 10 of global shipping company.”

Also, Mr. Park mentions, “ with all the ships being built to be able to convert fuel to LNG, not only will it conserve fuel but will be able to cut back on costs as well as become a leader in positioning ourselves as an environmental friendly shipper. For example, we are preparing to get issued the Energy Efficiency Certificate with documented EEDI for all ships.”

Along with it’s aggressive order of new ships, UASC is currently joined in the ‘Ocean Three’ alliance with CMA-CGM and CSCL (China Shipping Container Line) and along with Germany’s Hamburg Sud, concluded a contract to share loading space, and starting July, will venture out to the South American course that they have not yet ventured out to.

“With increasing services and loading space due to the new alliances and contracts, HQ is wanting to increase market share in Korea, it is imperative for USHICO’s sales to keep going strong.” Also, “I, myself have been with UASC for the past 40 years, promoting our services in the market, becoming one with HQ to induce cargo. HQ continues to look towards me to continue sales to large shippers in the Korean market.” said Mr. Park.

중동을 기반으로 한 연합선사인 UASC(United Arab Shipping Company)가 창사 이후 최대 규모의 투자를 단행해서 건조중인 17척의 초대형 컨테이너선 중 첫 1만8,800TEU급의 선박 인도를 목전에 두고 있다.

지난해 11월 27일 이미 현대중공업에 발주한 총 17척의 초대형 컨테이너선 중 첫 15,000TEU  MV “Sajir”를 인수했으며, 나머지 선박들도 계속적으로 현대중공업 및 현대삼호중공업에서 건조 진행 중이다.

오는 4월 29일 현대삼호중공업에서 개최될 첫 1만8,800TEU급의 MV “Barzan”의 명명식에는 UASC 이사회 이사진들, 최고경영진들, 신조선팀 및 기술팀, 기타 본사임원들, 그리고 대형화주와 언론관계자 등 총 150명 이상이 참석,  성대히 치러질 예정이다.

UASC 한국총대리점인 연합해운의 박태원 사장은 이번 명명식과 관련, “총 수주 금액만 20억달러가 넘는 창사 이래 최대 규모의 선박 발주로 UASC는 이들 선박을 모두 인수 및 선대 개편이 완료되면 글로벌 상위 10위권에 근접하게 될 것이다”라고 밝혔다.

또 박태원 사장은 “LNG로 연료변환이 가능하도록 건조된 선박이기 때문에 연료 절감 효과로 인한 원가경쟁력뿐 아니라, 친환경 운항을 지향하는 선사로서의 입지를 다질 수 있을 것"이라며  "예를 들면, 자체 모든 선박에 Energy Efficiency Certificate with documented EEDI를 발급 받을 예정"이라고 언급했다.

한편, 이러한 공격적인 신조 발주로 인해 UASC는 현재 CMA-CGM, CSCL(China Shipping Container Line)와 함께 ‘오션스리(Ocean Three, O3)’ 얼라이언스를 구축했으며, 독일 함부루크수드(Hamburg Sud)와 선복량 공유 계약을 체결함으로써 오는 7월에는 그 동안 진출하지 못했던 남미지역 항로에 대한 서비스도 제공할 예정이어서 주목된다.

박태원 사장은 “새로운 얼라이언스 구축 및 선복 공유 계약으로 인해 늘어나는 서비스 및 선복을 가지고 본사는 한국 내에서의 UASC 서비스의 시장점유율 확대에 나서고 있으며, 그렇기 때문에 연합해운의 영업력이 더 절실한 상태” 라고 지적했다. 이어 그는  “제 자신이 지난 40년간 UASC 서비스를 시장에 알리며 본사와 일심동체처럼 화물 유치를 해왔다"며  "UASC 본사는 저에게 앞으로도 더 나은  서비스로 한결같이 한국에서의 대(對) 화주 영업에 혼신의 노력을 다해 줄 것을 기대하고 있다”고 강조했다.
